No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate

The federal No Surprises Act, effective January 1, 2022, protects patients from certain unexpected medical bills and gives uninsured and self-pay patients the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges. This page explains those protections and how they apply to care at Healing Minds Psychiatry.

When you receive emergency services, or certain services from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility, you are generally protected from balance billing. Balance billing (sometimes called surprise billing) happens when an out-of-network provider bills you for the difference between their charge and the amount your health plan pays.

In these protected situations, you are only responsible for your in-network cost sharing, such as the copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles you would pay for an in-network provider. You are not required to give up these protections, and you are never required to seek care outside of your health plan's network.

If you are uninsured or choose not to use your insurance, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of the expected charges for your scheduled services before those services are provided.

• Automatic estimate: When you schedule a service at least 3 business days in advance, you will receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing.
• Estimate on request: You may also ask for a Good Faith Estimate at any time, before scheduling a service.
• Keep a copy: Make sure to save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate for your records.

If Your Bill Is Higher Than the Estimate

If you receive a final bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. You may start this process within 120 calendar days of the date on your bill.
